The cost for website design varies according to what you need. Cost depends on how many pages, functionality, features, whether it is custom or using a ready-made template, if it includes a content management system, a shopping cart, whether it includes keyword research and or oniste SEO, web hosting/email, support/aftercare, maintenance, training on how to use the CMS/admin, writing/editing/optimisation of your page content, and other things.

So you see, you can't just ring up a web deign company and say "how much is it for a new website?" and expect to get a price without giving at least an outline of the specification you want. And there may be things you hadn't even realised were required. For example does your website need to take card payments directly on your website or will your customers pay via a third party gateway? (e.g. PayPal, WorldPay). If it's to take payments on your site, then your website needs to be 'PCI compliant' or your merchant service provider will not authorise payments to be taken via your website.

To get a precise cost, write down as much as you can about what your website will actually do (functions), how many pages you think you will need and anything else you want the web design company to take care of (e.g. writing the content, designing a logo for you, web hosting, domain name registration, and so on).

You need a web designer who will make sure you are aware of all costs involved up front and the ongoing costs too, such as web hosting and email, ssl certificate renewal, domain registration and renewal, software updates and maintenance, and so on.

To give you a couple of guide prices on what Indizine can offer you, here are some examples:

Example 1: 10 page html/css website with a contact form. Includes keyword research and onsite SEO and a year's web hosting with email (our Bronze level). Includes a full custom design.

Cost: £500

Additional pages cost £25 each. Additional functions and features will be quoted for once we know what is required. This example is perfect for a 'brochure style' website which contains just text and static images.

Example 2: As above, but with a content management system (Joomla or Wordpress) and an optional gallery function to showcase your own images.

Cost: £650

Example 3: Ecommerce website using a quality third-party shopping cart with fully loaded features and easy to use back end admin system. Unlimited products. Full custom design. Includes keyword research and onsite SEO, web hosting with email, RapidSSL 123-bit certificate. Please ask for the full list of cart features as there are simply too many to list here!

Cost: £1500

Add an additional blog (designed to match your website) to your ecommerce site, at the time of ordering, for just £200 extra. (Normally costs £400).

Important Note: All websites we produce include search engine friendly URL's, keyword research and onsite optimisation (SEO) and web hosting/email all as standard. We ensure websites meet W3C 1.0 web standards where absolutely possibly (though some scripts may affect this and we'll let you know if it does). We also make sure your website is compliant in all major browsers and operating systems such as Window and MAC, IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari.

Once your website is tested and goes live, we submit it to Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines and again as complimentary from us, we can set up a Gmail account for you to manage your emails and create a Google local listing for you. We also include a Privacy Policy document as standard at  no extra cost, to all websites we design.

Finally - and most importantly of all - you will own any custom website we design for you (excludes the Pay Monthly rental websites described below). You will be provided with a full copy of your website upon completion (usually in a zip file you can store on your computer), plus all the login details to your CMS (if you have one) and your web hosting and domain name control panels. You will fully own and control your websites outright, including copyright to your front end custom design.

We also show you how to do backups of your website, how to view and understand the website stats, how to use the CMS (if you have one) to edit content, and answer any other queries you have.

If comparing quotes, please make sure you are comparing our prices with a like-for-like specification as all these things are what makes for a good website that will rank in search engines and support your offsite SEO efforts. You can get cheaper websites, but do they offer the same quality, the same rapid and professional response, the same level of customer service and assurity and integrity? Are they creating just a 'website' or an important marketing tool for your business? Have they got a background in marketing? In SEO? In business advice? Or are they just 'designers'? Have they fully evaluated your business and what you want out of your website? Designers can produce some pretty eye catching designs, but will it actually work - will it bring in traffic (is it optimised?) and will it convert that traffic (customers visitng your website) into enquiries or online orders? If not, be careful of that pretty design. All that glitters is not gold!
